Stranger Than Heaven, the new title from the studio behind the Like a Dragon series, delivers a combination of visceral souls-like combat with business management and music production mechanics. The game follows a 50-year journey of protagonist Makoto Daito, alternating between brutal action sequences and moments of show business glamour.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the news came after hands-on events where critics experienced portions of the Prologue and three distinct chapters (Kokura in Fukuoka, Kure in Hiroshima, and Minami in Osaka). Outlets including Push Square, Eurogamer, IGN, and VGC also participated in final demonstrations ahead of launch.
The previews reveal that combat mechanics center on parry-based defense, in line with souls-like games, but the title stands out for its top-tier minigames, including music composition and club management. The narrative tackles themes of early 20th-century discrimination intentionally while incorporating deliberate anachronisms.
Critical reception has been mixed on certain aspects: some celebrate the bold direction and visual style, while questioning group combat and environmental exploration. Stranger Than Heaven launches January 15, 2027 on PlayStation 5.
