Xbox and Microsoft are implementing mandatory age verification for Australian users purchasing 18+ rated games across both console and PC platforms. According to communications sent to users over the weekend and reported by PC Gamer and Eurogamer, the requirement takes effect in August 2026 to comply with local Australian regulations.
Users in Australia will have five verification options: email-based verification, facial age estimation through "secure selfie," credit card, driver's license, or passport. Age verification is handled by London-based company VerifyMy.
As noted by Eurogamer, "games you already own won't be affected," preserving access to previously purchased 18+ titles. Some reports indicate users in New Zealand have also begun receiving similar notifications, though mandatory rollout is focused on Australia.
The move reflects mounting regulatory pressure on digital game platforms to implement stronger age protection measures across multiple markets.
