Gears of War: E-Day sold 230,000 copies in its first week following its official October launch, according to data from Alinea Analytics shared by analyst Rhys Elliott. Of total sales, 168,000 came from Steam while only 62,000 came from Xbox platforms (console and PC combined).
Although copy sales are modest for a flagship Xbox title, the game generated approximately 37 million dollars in direct revenue. However, the full picture reveals a broader impact: roughly 1.7 million players accessed E-Day via Xbox Game Pass, while 722,000 paid an extra 30 dollars to play via the Premium Edition, bringing total revenue generated since launch to approximately 58 million dollars.
According to Alinea Analytics, Game Pass is "cannibalising much of the premium revenue," substantially affecting direct sales. Numbers began to plateau rapidly after launch, suggesting the initial peak was limited compared to franchise entries from prior generations.
The game is highly rated by critics, but its commercial performance reignites debate within the community about Xbox's day-one Game Pass launch strategy for high-budget exclusive titles.
