Activision has confirmed that the next Call of Duty game will be a brand-new sub-franchise, ending a five-year cycle of alternating between Black Ops and Modern Warfare entries. According to GameSpot, Tyler Bahl, Activision's chief marketing officer, revealed that the community requested something "fresh" and a "tonal shift" not seen since Call of Duty: Vanguard in 2021.
"They wanted something fresh, and even though there were different time settings and ways to play the game with new features, that tonal shift is something that they were looking for," said Bahl in an interview with The Game Business, as reported by GamesRadar.
The decision follows internal studies of the surprising commercial success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 ports on PS4 and PS5. Bahl revealed the ports showed "pent-up demand" from players wanting to return to the "good old days," a lesson being applied to not only Modern Warfare 4 but future franchise entries.
Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2, marking the final chapter of an era that began with 2019's Modern Warfare.
