Overwatch's season 4 launches August 11 with a major battle pass redesign that addresses long-standing player frustration. Instead of a linear 80-tier system, Blizzard is splitting the pass into five shorter "tracks" that players select at the start of each season, letting them unlock rewards for their preferred heroes first. According to product director Chris McCabe in an official blog post, this allows a Support player who wants a Brigitte skin to earn it immediately rather than waiting for tier 70 in the old structure.
The overhaul introduces the ability to exchange skins players don't want for alternatives, acknowledging that Overwatch's roster of 50+ heroes means not every battle pass will feature rewards for each player's favorite characters. GameSpot reports that the system breaks rewards into smaller chunks so players can quickly pursue what matters to them most.
Blizzard is also bringing back old battle passes permanently starting this season. These unvaulted passes will be available for players who didn't own them or can be accessed by those who purchased them before. However, premium currency, player titles, and Mythic-level skins from the original versions won't return, according to PC Gamer.
Season 4, Heroes of Busan, features new Mythic skins for Genji and Sojourn, plus a new tank hero called D.Mon. The changes represent a shift away from pure fear-of-missing-out mechanics that dominate most live service games, giving Overwatch players more meaningful choice in their progression.
