Rockstar Games hit a new commercial milestone with Grand Theft Auto 5. During an investor conference call on August 7, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed the title has sold over 230 million copies worldwide since its 2013 launch.
According to Zelnick, "the Grand Theft Auto series once again exceeded expectations, and to date, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 230 million units worldwide." The executive also noted that recurrent consumer spending grew 3% and GTA Plus continues to expand, driven by new content offerings including the Mission Creator, tools that empower the community to create custom missions.
That figure places GTA 5 in a category of its own: the game sells more copies per year on average than most megahits manage across their entire lifespans. The company also stated that pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are exceptional, with launch set for November 19.
The milestone reinforces GTA 5 as one of the greatest commercial successes in gaming history, maintaining relevance over a decade after its initial release.
