Without warning, Aspyr announced and released The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition today, a remaster of the 2011 action RPG. The game is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam and GOG) for USD 19.99, discounted to USD 17.99 through August 25.
Originally developed by Snowblind Studios in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, the title had been delisted digitally in 2019 and remained difficult to obtain. The Legacy Edition includes technical optimizations for modern hardware, online and split-screen co-op for up to two players, bug fixes, and a new autosave feature. On Switch 1, local co-op is unavailable and frame rate caps at 30fps.
According to IGN, the European version for Nintendo Switch 2 will arrive one day later, on August 18. The game takes place in a darker version of Middle-earth and follows the original story of Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron, rather than directly adapting the books or films.
Polygon reported that Aspyr has signaled plans to remaster additional titles in the future, suggesting this may be the first of several similar efforts.
