Sony has decided to restructure Horizon Hunters Gathering, the multiplayer spinoff of the Horizon franchise. According to Bloomberg, Guerrilla Games has been working on the reboot since June, stripping out live service elements from the game following negative feedback during private playtests.
The shift is substantial. What was announced as a live service title inspired by Monster Hunter will become a traditional multiplayer co-op game with a story mode and smaller scope. The studio has until December to impress Sony executives with its next project milestone.
Horizon Hunters Gathering was unveiled in February as a cartoony spinoff of the mainline Horizon series, visually contrasting the photorealistic aesthetic of Aloy's games. The title is planned for PlayStation 5 and PC. Closed playtests conducted earlier this year did not generate the expected response, prompting Sony to greenlight the restructuring.
Separately, Bloomberg also reported that the next single-player entry in the series, the third mainline Horizon game, remains years away from release, with only a small team working on its planning at Guerrilla Games.
