Gears of War E-Day campaign impresses in early previews

Gaming outlets got hands-on access to a two-hour preview of Gears of War E-Day's campaign, set during Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde erupts across Sera. According to Xbox Wire, the game transports players back 20 years to the original title's launch, delivering the same intensity that defined the franchise.

Previews focused on Act 2, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago joined by two new squad members fighting for survival against the Horde over three brutal nights in the city of Kalona. IGN highlights that the campaign blends refined combat mechanics through a weapon mod system with smarter level design: rather than repeating Gears 5's open-world direction, E-Day features multi-path areas with optional secondary objectives and hidden collectibles scattered throughout.

According to PC Gamer, the first preview segment showcased the series' signature "linear spectacles," while the second sent Bravo Squad loose in an open section of Kolona City. Both segments worked well, though the outlets suggest traditional sequences will shine brightest. GamesRadar notes the atmosphere is bleaker than expected: the city is in its "death throes," military resistance is disorganized, and the opening conflict feels desperate.

VGC describes what may be the franchise's most emotionally striking story to date, while Flow Games highlights fresh exploration mechanics and a melancholic tone reminiscent of the early games. The game is scheduled for 2026.
