PlaySide Studios has delayed Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a real-time strategy game based on HBO's TV series, from its originally planned 2026 window to 2027. The studio cited development timelines in a statement obtained by Eurogamer, saying it needs extra time to "ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for."
The developer noted that progress has been steady but requires further refinement. War for Westeros was first revealed at Summer Game Fest 2024 with a promise of large-scale RTS battles, diplomatic house-to-house gameplay tied to Westeros lore, and asymmetrical mechanics shaped by the show's brutal setting. The game pulls from the HBO adaptation rather than George R.R. Martin's original book series, and features narration by Charles Dance along with digital recreations of show actors including Kit Harington and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
The shift adds War for Westeros to an already crowded 2027 release slate as studios adjust launch windows to avoid major releases like Grand Theft Auto 6.
