Rockstar considered four playable characters for GTA 6 but feared spreading player time too thin

Rockstar Games considered including four playable characters in Grand Theft Auto 6, but the studio scrapped the concept over concerns about fragmenting player engagement. Rod Nelson, co-head of Rockstar, shared the details in an interview with IGN.

According to Nelson, following the development of GTA 5, the team explored various narrative directions. "We talked about different ideas: 'Do we have more characters? How do we follow up three characters? Is it four characters now?'" he explained. "But we worried about diluting the amount of player time with each, and therefore player connection with those characters."

GTA 6 settles on two protagonists, Lucia and Jason, marking a reduction from the three playable characters in its predecessor. This decision underscores Rockstar's commitment to fostering deeper relationships between players and each character throughout the campaign, rather than expanding the roster.
