Halo: Campaign Evolved arrives on PlayStation 25 years after Xbox exclusivity

It's official: Halo: Campaign Evolved released yesterday in early access for PlayStation 5, ending 25 years of franchise exclusivity on Xbox consoles. According to the PlayStation Blog, the remake modernizes the classic 2001 FPS with new mechanics, refined controls, DualSense haptic feedback, and adjusted weapons to deliver a refreshed take on the shooter icon.

The game is now available in early access for Premium Edition owners (US$ 70), with full launch set for July 28 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The PS5 version includes downloadable content even on physical copies.

Beyond the modernizations, Halo: Campaign Evolved adds three new missions set two years before the original campaign's events, 32 new collectible skulls, and terminals with additional lore. The remake also enables third-person perspective via unlockable modifiers. Early player reports, however, flag issues: according to PC Gamer, the Steam version suffers frequent crashes, server login requirements for solo campaign mode, and an initial bug that opened the art book instead of the game.

The launch also sparked buzz about the franchise's future: players who beat the campaign on Legendary difficulty see a bonus cutscene where Sergeant Johnson breaks the fourth wall and says "See you in the sequel," hinting that a Halo 2 remake is already in development, per reports from IGN and Polygon.
