4A Games unveiled fresh footage of Metro 2039 at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. According to PC Gamer and Rock Paper Shotgun, the game brings players back to Moscow and its underground tunnels, where a new protagonist called Stranger confronts Hunter, a former hero now ruling the metro under fascist regime.
As GamesRadar noted, the trailer confirms that the game incorporates weapon customization from Metro Exodus alongside visual fidelity that 4A Games frames as evolution from the 2019 title. The narrative centers on decaying stations, a population under propaganda control, and new survival tools for the Stranger.
Rock Paper Shotgun described Metro 2039 as a hybrid that revives the claustrophobic nature of the original games (2033 and Last Light) while retaining some of the open-ended exploration elements Exodus introduced. The return to the Russian capital marks a clear shift from Artyom's journey in the previous game.
