id Software lost 136 staff while planning Perfect Dark reboot and John Wick-style game

id Software was working on multiple projects when Microsoft announced mass layoffs last week. According to GamesBeat, the studio had in development a new Perfect Dark game, a multiplayer or co-op focused Doom experience, and an original martial arts action title inspired by John Wick, codenamed "Fury" and previously pitched by director Hugo Martin.

The discovery of canceled projects emerged following 136 of 185 id Software employees being laid off, leaving the studio effectively the size of a support operation, according to affected staff. The cuts came days after the release of Doom: The Dark Ages' Revelations expansion.

John Carmack, id Software's co-founder, responded to the layoffs with sadness but without expressing anger. "My 'Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand' statement isn't aging well," he wrote on X. "This is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month." Carmack suggested id Software was a marginal operation from Microsoft's perspective, noting that Minecraft revenue has been propping up several other studios.
