Payday 2 is undergoing a substantial engine overhaul. According to PC Gamer, the update ports the game to 64-bit architecture, eliminating out-of-memory crashes that have plagued it for years, and upgrades rendering to DirectX 11, which improves performance on lower-end hardware without changing visual quality.
Install size has been cut by more than half, dropping from 86GB to 32GB. The overhaul was developed by Sidetrack Games, the studio that took over the title in 2025 when Starbreeze decided to focus entirely on salvaging the struggling Payday 3.
The move represents a significant long-term commitment to the classic heist game, which maintains an active community despite launching in 2012. The focus on optimization and sustained support contrasts sharply with the difficulties its newer successor continues to face in the market.
