According to Eurogamer, representatives from Mexico have submitted an antitrust complaint against Sony, arguing that the company's decision to cease manufacturing games on physical discs constitutes anticompetitive and anti-consumer conduct. Federal deputy Iraís Reyes and senator Luis Donaldo are leading the effort.
The controversy stemmed from Sony's July 2026 announcement confirming that new PlayStation titles will stop receiving disc-based releases starting January 2028. The decision sparked backlash across multiple regions, amplified by Sony's claim that consumer preference for digital already significantly outpaces physical media.
In the United Kingdom, the Entertainment Retailers Association also opposed the plan. Push Square reported that retail groups emphasized that physical games for PS5 and PS4 accounted for half of all UK physical game revenue in 2025, indicating the segment retains considerable financial relevance.
Sony's original announcement was also accompanied by word that the company will shut down the PS3 and PS Vita digital stores in 2027, broadening the scope of the platform's planned distribution overhaul.
