Independent developer CryZENx has cancelled his Unreal Engine-based remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time after at least a decade in development. According to IGN, the decision came shortly after Nintendo announced an official remake of the Nintendo 64 classic coming to Switch 2 later this year.
In a Patreon post, CryZENx announced that the "Ocarina of Time project [has] officially stopped." While he did not initially detail the reason, he later clarified in comments that it was "better to just stop the project for now or I would [have] disappeared because of Nintendo ninjas," referencing the company's reputation for aggressive intellectual property enforcement.
The fan project had accumulated years of work and was recognized in the community for its visually faithful recreation of the original game adapted for modern PC hardware. With Nintendo's official announcement, the developer chose to shut down his efforts to avoid inevitable legal conflict with the Japanese company, which has a history of taking action against Ocarina of Time remakes and fan games.
