Cyberpunk 2077 reached another commercial milestone by surpassing 40 million copies sold since launching in December 2020, according to CD Projekt Red's announcement. The figure places the game among the 20 best-selling titles of all time, with a growth of 5 million units since November, when the developer had reported 35 million copies.
The result represents one of the largest comebacks in video game history. Cyberpunk 2077 launched in critical condition, plagued by bugs and technical problems severe enough that Sony removed the game from the PlayStation Store. The situation was so dire that many initially suggested the developer simply fix the most critical issues and move forward.
CD Projekt invested years in patches, updates, and the Phantom Liberty expansion to rebuild community trust. Currently, the game maintains a "very positive" rating on Steam and launched as a flagship title for Switch 2. The developer is now preparing Cyberpunk 2, while watching the first title surpass even The Witcher 3 in sales velocity.
The long-term success cements Cyberpunk 2077 as CD Projekt Red's primary revenue driver and establishes a strong foundation for future projects within the cyberpunk universe.
