Capcom discontinues Dragon's Dogma 2 microtransactions and deluxe edition

Capcom has announced it will discontinue the controversial microtransactions and deluxe edition of Dragon's Dogma 2 effective June 24 (June 25 in British time). According to the company, Rift Crystals (premium currency), Gaol Keys, Portcrystals, Wakestones, and cosmetic items for the player character and pawns will be removed from sale permanently.

The decision comes two years after the game's launch, when the community heavily criticized the presence of these convenience items. As reported by Eurogamer and PC Gamer, most of the microtransactions offered no competitive advantage, the items were naturally obtainable in-game through shops and progression, making the monetization strategy largely an optics issue.

The removal is part of preparations for Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, an expansion scheduled for October 2026. Beyond deactivating microtransactions, Capcom will keep only the base game version, a Camping Kit bundle, and digital soundtrack available for purchase. The base version will also receive a permanent price discount, according to the developer's statement.

This represents a significant turnaround following two years of negative feedback across platforms like Steam, where the game faced a predominantly negative reception at launch partly due to questionable monetization practices.
