Compulsion Games, the Montreal-based studio behind South of Midnight, announced it is seeking new work opportunities through partnerships with game and entertainment studios. The announcement came just days after the Canadian developer negotiated its independence from Microsoft during the console maker's recent mass layoffs.
According to IGN, the company posted on LinkedIn that it is "expanding opportunities to collaborate with studios across the games and entertainment industry." In the statement, Compulsion highlighted its track record with South of Midnight, a game that earned a BAFTA Award, a Peabody Award, seven Canadian Game Awards, and spots on multiple "Best Games of 2025" lists.
Per Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio appears focused on landing co-development or support roles on other studios' projects, likely to keep operations running while developing a new original game. Compulsion emphasized its experience creating acclaimed original intellectual property, offering "artistry, technical expertise, and collaborative approach" to future ventures.
The return to independence marks Compulsion's shift back to its roots after being acquired by Xbox. The studio retained the rights to its franchises, including We Happy Few, the cozy survival game it released in 2018.
