Bungie confirmed on Tuesday, June 25, a "reduction in force" across the company following the end of Destiny 2 development. The announcement was made officially on X, with Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, detailing the impact of the cuts.
According to a mandatory WARN notice spotted by press outlets, 292 positions in Washington, where Bungie is headquartered, were affected. The actual total is likely significantly higher when including remote workers and external contractors not mentioned in the statement. Estimates suggest around 400 people were laid off, roughly half the studio's workforce.
Most of those affected worked on Destiny 2, which received its final major update in June. Developers working on the in-development Marathon project were also impacted, along with Sony Interactive Entertainment employees providing operational support to the studio. Justin Truman, Bungie's studio head, also departed.
In an official statement, Bungie said the decision is "necessary to best position the studio now and for the future," acknowledging the profound impact on those affected. The restructuring comes as the studio transitions from Destiny 2's conclusion toward projects still in early development stages.
