According to PC Gamer, two largely forgotten horror titles from the 1990s are making a comeback. Ecstatica (1994) and Ecstatica 2 (1997), created by developer Andrew Spencer and published by Psygnosis, will arrive on Steam in the coming weeks.
What sets these games apart is their distinctive rendering technology. Instead of standard polygonal character models, Ecstatica used ellipsoids, roundish and bulbous shapes, to render its characters and environments. This iconic visual style became the defining characteristic of both games.
The first game is a medieval-themed survival horror experience, while the sequel retains the series' visual identity but pulls back on horror elements in favor of a broader gameplay approach.
Both titles attracted attention in PC gaming magazines during the mid-1990s and developed a cult following. The restoration of these games opens the door for modern players to explore an obscure chapter of gaming history and allows longtime fans to revisit these forgotten works.
