Capcom revealed in an interview with Game Informer (reported by GamesRadar) that it aims to make Resident Evil an annual franchise. According to Masachika Kawata, producer of the series, remakes are key to reaching that target.
"Producing a new entry in the Resident Evil series every year would be quite an undertaking," Kawata explained. "But being able to revisit older games and remake them helps Capcom meet that goal of releasing a Resident Evil title each year and allows the team to continually challenge themselves and hone their craft."
The producer stressed that remakes are not secondary. "They are just as important as the mainline entries," he said. This approach also frees up resources: the budget saved on remakes is reinvested in new and ambitious projects like the announced Pragmata.
In recent years, Capcom released remakes of Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 4 (2023), with Resident Evil: Code Veronica coming in 2027. The strategy has worked: since 2017, there have been few years without a significant release from the franchise on the market.
