RGG Studio, the developer behind the Yakuza and Like a Dragon franchises, has unveiled a completely new combat system for Stranger Than Heaven, arriving January 2027. According to hands-on presentations at Summer Game Fest, the game introduces a mechanic where the protagonist's left and right sides are controlled independently — the right shoulder and trigger buttons fire attacks from the right side, while the left counterparts mirror this control scheme.
The shift marks a departure from the arcade-style approach that has defined previous Yakuza titles. While earlier games in the series favored quick, intuitive action, Stranger Than Heaven aims to reward strategy and deliberation in every punch and parry. Outlets including GameSpot and Push Square, which sampled the game firsthand, report that the system delivers a more thoughtful combat flow.
The game itself is a prequel spanning 50 years across five distinct periods in Japanese history and has drawn attention for its unusual cast — featuring appearances by Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur as a character (voiced by an actor, without AI assistance). According to IGN, the executive director stated that the team worked to honor these public figures' families in their roles within the game.
