During the Final Fantasy Fan Fest in Berlin over the weekend, Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy 14, cautioned about the massive scope of potential remakes for classic entries in the franchise. According to Yoshida, a large-scale remake of Final Fantasy 6, 8, or 9 would take even longer than the FF7 Remake trilogy to complete.
In remarks to the press at the event, Yoshida explained that games like FF6 carry an "incredibly huge" size. "You've got to think about it," he said through a translator. "Look at Final Fantasy 6, it's such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense." Per Polygon, the director suggested such remakes could require "4 or maybe even 5 installments" to do the stories proper justice.
The FF7 Remake trilogy, concluding in 2027 with Final Fantasy VII Revelation, has already consumed over a decade of Square Enix's development effort. Yoshida emphasized that while he respects fan wishes, the sheer complexity of expanding such massive classics while preserving narrative depth presents a serious challenge.
The comment arrives as Square Enix remains focused on FF7 Revelation and the Evercold expansion for FF14, launching in January 2027.
