Shion, the 52nd hero and 24th damage character in Overwatch 2, presents an unprecedented technical challenge for Blizzard. The character's core ability involves a high-end motorcycle that she rides before launching it at enemies and detonating it — and during development, Blizzard's engineers encountered an unusual problem: she became invincible during the attack.
According to Polygon, this mechanic forced Blizzard to create new technology for the game. Over ten years of Overwatch, the studio had introduced creative characters — from a genetically modified hamster to a flying cat — but none had tested the game's infrastructure as much as this vehicle-based ability.
The design team also drew inspiration from action games, particularly the Devil May Cry series. Per PC Gamer, Blizzard nearly implemented a style meter following the DMC formula, where players would start at E or D rank and climb to S by chaining abilities together. Kenny Hudson, lead hero producer, explained the idea was scrapped because it felt too stressful in combat and proved difficult to reward players who reached the highest ranks.
Narratively, Shion represents Blizzard's intent to deconstruct male-centered action hero archetypes, drawing influence from films like John Wick and Kill Bill. The hero debuts in Overwatch 2's season 3.
