Square Enix has confirmed the cancellation of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile and the closure of the game's Chinese version. According to the company, the decision was made due to "adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment." The licensing agreement with Tencent, its partner in the project, was terminated through amicable negotiation.
Launched exclusively in China in June 2025, the mobile game was an adaptation of the popular MMORPG for Android and iOS. The Chinese version will shut down on September 30, 2026. From now on, new players cannot register and existing players cannot make additional in-game purchases.
The project began years ago when a small team of dedicated fans proposed the idea to MMO director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida, armed with a 100-page proposal that caught the attention of Square Enix leadership. Despite the initial interest, the mobile version remained largely under the radar during development and operation, with few announcements about its progress before the China launch.
The company offered "sincere apologies for being unable to meet your expectations" to players interested in the global version.
