Capcom confirmed Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen will launch October 8, 2026. According to producer Naoto Oyama, work on the expansion began six months after the base game shipped in March 2024, a period when the team focused on fixing issues and responding to player complaints.
Director Kento Kinoshita, who led 2013's Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, joined the sequel's team partway through development and returned to helm the new expansion. In interviews with Eurogamer and GamesRadar+, Oyama said the project was born from desire to answer the "incredibly passionate feedback" from players. "Sorry to keep everyone waiting," Oyama told the outlets.
Despite multiple patches addressing features like fast travel, Dragon's Dogma 2 remains a demanding and divisive experience. Kinoshita said the expansion will preserve this design friction, giving players multiple approaches to how they engage with the game. "That is something that we offer so that players can make a decision on how to play," the director explained.
The base game faced criticism over technical performance and certain design choices after launch, which overshadowed discussion of its distinctive systems. Dark Arisen represents Capcom's effort to "win back the trust" of RPG fans, as noted to Eurogamer.
