Nintendo has shared the first details about the development of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 through a series of Ask the Developer interviews. According to franchise producer Eiji Aonuma, the decision to remake the 1998 classic stemmed from a specific goal: ensuring younger team members understood the historical impact of the original title.
"Many of the team members who work alongside me on Legend of Zelda games today have only experienced developing the more recent titles," Aonuma said. "That led me to wonder, 'Do they truly understand just how significant The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was to the series as a whole?'"
The remake was developed internally by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) Production Group No. 3, the same team responsible for virtually every Zelda mainline entry since the early 2000s. On the visual front, art director Aya Shida explained that the team sought to balance the Switch 2's increased power with preserving the original's spirit. Guiding concepts included "a puppet-show feel" and "the analogue feel of practical effects films."
During development, Aonuma proposed adding fast-travel warp points inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but the team chose to remove the feature. As reported by Eurogamer, the developers realized the mechanic would undermine "the moments of discovery" that define the original experience. The remake launches on Switch 2 on November 5.
