Marathon announces experimental PvE roguelite mode launching next week

Bungie announced a new experimental PvE mode called Vault Breaker for Marathon, its extraction shooter. According to Polygon, the mode launches on July 21 as part of the Season 2 mid-season update and will remain available only until August 4 for testing.

Vault Breaker is described as a roguelite experience within the Cryo Archive, allowing solo and duo players to engage with content without PvP opponents. As PC Gamer notes, the two-week window represents a cautious approach by Bungie to gather feedback before the full rollout.

The mode will receive a wider release during Season 3, which begins September 22, according to the same outlet. The addition responds to long-standing community requests for an alternative to the game's competitive focus since launch.

The announcement comes at a critical time for the studio. Per Polygon, Bungie faces layoffs and has wound down development on Destiny 2, making Marathon's success essential to the company's future.
