Square Enix has announced that Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 will release on Switch 2 on October 1, 2026 (outside Japan, where they are already available). The updated versions will feature improved resolution and frame rate compared to the original Switch editions, according to Siliconera.
The publisher will not offer an upgrade path or save data transfer for players who already own the titles on the prior console. Games will be available individually for £49.99 / $59.99 physically and digitally, or as a digital bundle for £59.99 / $74.99, as reported by Nintendo Life.
This decision stands against the current industry trend toward cross-generation upgrades becoming standard. GamesRadar noted that Square Enix has permitted upgrades for titles like Final Fantasy 7 Remake on other platforms, making this approach notably restrictive.
Both announcements came during the series' eighth anniversary celebration. Octopath Traveler established Square Enix's HD-2D visual style, and both games are lengthy experiences packed with optional content and challenging quests, which may discourage players from restarting from scratch.
