NBA 2K27 marks a turning point for the franchise: it's the first year the series won't launch on PlayStation 4. According to Push Square, the game will be available exclusively on PS5 starting September 4th, ending a tradition of cross-generational support the series has maintained for years.
The cover athletes for the game's three editions have already been revealed. Per VGC, Victor Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark and Derrick Rose represent the campaign across men's basketball, women's basketball and NBA legacy.
The move reflects a broader industry shift: sports games typically support older consoles longer than other genres, but 2K Sports now signals the transition to the new generation is complete. Players still on PS4 will need to upgrade to continue with the series.
