Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, confirmed to The New York Times that Lucia and Jason's romantic dynamic in GTA 6 is not predetermined by the story. The two protagonists begin together, but whether they remain a couple or are simply partners in crime depends entirely on the player's actions.
The relationship operates through a management system where the player must respond to text messages and demonstrate effort to maintain closeness, similar to mechanics found in other games. "It's new for GTA, this idea of your actions having meaning in terms of how you treat your partner," Nelson told GameSpot.
However, there is one guarantee: Lucia and Jason cannot break up entirely. "They will remain partners in crime," Nelson told IGN. "You will always have the benefit of working together and having each other's back, whether they're romantically close or not doesn't change that. They will still work together." Player choices primarily determine how their story unfolds throughout the campaign.
Rockstar shared these details during GTA 6's extended look, which aired on Netflix in August alongside 26 minutes of gameplay footage featuring the protagonists in action.
