Blizzard revises controversial item changes in Diablo 4 Season 14 after community pushback

Diablo 4 faced significant backlash over proposed changes to its item system for Season 14, Death Awakening. Blizzard initially planned to substantially weaken Mythics, the game's rarest tier, and inject more randomness into Uniques to encourage varied character builds.

According to PC Gamer, after running a week-long playtest, Blizzard reconsidered. The studio is keeping its goal of expanding Unique usefulness, allowing any of the 100+ unique items to become Mythic with a 30% boost to its special power. However, it adjusted the approach to avoid gutting the appeal of these hard-won drops.

As GameSpot reports, the change aims for the "long-term health" of the game by reducing mandatory "one-item-fits-all" solutions that made certain pieces almost required for endgame. Blizzard acknowledged the community found the original plan too punishing and found middle ground that preserves build diversity without alienating veterans hunting legendaries.

Season 14 also brings a crossover with Overwatch, introducing cosmetics themed around heroes like Reinhardt, Mercy, and Genji. The collaboration includes a free reliquary with Overwatch-inspired weapons and cosmetics, while additional cosmetic appearances will be available in the in-game shop.

Diablo 4 has been in active tuning since the Lord of Hatred expansion launch, as Blizzard works to balance player feedback with its long-term design vision for the game.
