Riot reverses classic skin paywall in League of Legends Classic after community backlash

League of Legends Classic, the new mode that strips the MOBA down to its earliest days in 2013 with old champion kits and removed heroes, hit Riot's public test environment to mixed reception. The friction point: classic skins (vintage character visuals) were locked behind a paid token system.

The community pushback was swift and loud. A Reddit thread gathered over 6,000 upvotes criticizing the approach, with players calling the mode "League 'not so' Classic" and declaring that "charging for Classic Skins is genuinely wild."

Riot reversed course within days. According to PC Gamer, Brian Feeney from the studio addressed the feedback in a video posted on X on July 16, saying "Feedback received" and confirming that all classic skins are now unlocked by default on the PBE.

The quick pivot highlights how sensitive Riot remains to community reaction on a mode designed entirely around nostalgia for longtime League players.
