Developers at Rockstar Games have opened a new chapter in their relationship with the company by formally requesting official recognition of the IWGB Game Workers Union. The union, which represents workers across Rockstar's offices in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London, has given the company ten working days to respond voluntarily. If Rockstar refuses, the matter may escalate to a UK government tribunal.
The union was formed in late May but remains unrecognized by Rockstar. Official recognition would grant members formal channels for collective bargaining on key issues including pay transparency, flexible working arrangements, and reducing crunch (periods of excessive overtime). According to the IWGB, the union's presence has already contributed to unprecedented average pay increases and financial incentives tied to crunch for the first time.
The push comes months after Rockstar conducted mass layoffs last year, actions that employees and unions characterized as "union-busting." GTA 6 is scheduled to launch in November on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. ZA/UM, the UK studio behind Disco Elysium, remains the only British games studio with formally recognized union status.
