Hasbro announced a $56 million impairment in its second-quarter earnings report stemming from the cancellation of several games in development that were scheduled to launch in 2028 and beyond. According to GameSpot, the figure represents a non-cash decrease in the value of assets within its digital games portfolio rather than a direct cash loss.
In a statement to shareholders, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks stated that the company reviewed its portfolio over recent quarters and updated plans for its digital future. "That work included canceling several games scheduled for release in 2028 and beyond and recording a $56 million non-cash write-down this quarter for related capitalized costs," Cocks said, as reported by GameSpot.
The move contrasts with Hasbro's aggressive 2022 strategy, when the company had roughly half a dozen studios working on games fueled by the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3. Projects tied to G.I. Joe and original titles like Exodus were announced during that period, but the company now plans to focus on franchises, platforms, and partnerships where it sees "the clearest upside" and the strongest competitive position.
Despite the cancellations, Hasbro continues to position Baldur's Gate 3 as central to its gaming strategy, underscoring its status as one of the industry's biggest successes in recent years.
