ZeniMax Online Studios, the developer behind The Elder Scrolls Online, was impacted by Microsoft's 3,200-person layoff announcement last week. The cuts add to reductions the studio had already faced a year prior.
According to community reports from the Elder Scrolls Online Tavern event in Hesse, Germany, studio representatives confirmed the team is now roughly the same size it was when the MMO released well-received expansions like Wrothgar and Summerset between 2015 and 2018, before staffing up for the since-canceled Blackbird MMO project.
In a statement to Eurogamer, community manager ZOS_Kevin said the studio is planning a revised roadmap going forward, with the goal remaining to "deliver great content." The statement directly addresses player fears that the title would shift into maintenance mode, where new substantial updates would cease.
While the headcount is lower than before the layoffs, the studio reaffirmed its commitment to continuing development for The Elder Scrolls Online, one of gaming's longest-running MMOs, which has received regular content updates since launching in 2014.
