In an appearance on the Human Can Opener podcast, Josh Sawyer, design director of Fallout: New Vegas, discussed how Obsidian approached game balance, particularly regarding skill checks in dialogue and unique reactions for different character builds.
According to Sawyer, the priority was ensuring players could construct their characters as intended without creating fundamentally weak builds. "I want people to build characters and have a good time with them. You have to think a little bit, but I don't like it when players have a character concept that they build, and it's like 'Oh, you just built a fundamentally bad character,'", he said.
The studio implements what Sawyer calls 'Karma Police': a dedicated team that goes through the game ensuring each skill gets engaging and challenging content. "We're not gonna leave you out to dry", the director summarized.
This approach set Obsidian apart at the time, when few studios could offer such deep reactivity based on player choices and builds, an aspect that helped New Vegas become recognized as a standout RPG even among its peers.
