ArenaNet has officially announced Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game, marking the franchise's first exploration of the collectible card game (CCG) genre. The reveal came shortly after Guild Wars 3 was announced earlier in the same month.
The game is licensed by ArenaNet and developed by NC, its parent company, with involvement from bilibili, China's leading video platform. According to Colin Johanson, ArenaNet studio head, Mistbound was created to offer fans a new way to engage with the franchise. "We felt it was time to give Guild Wars fans a new way to play together, inspired by the card game roots of the franchise, where they could compete in a competitive PvP arena in a CCG game space," Johanson stated.
The move into the CCG space builds on Guild Wars' original inspiration from Magic: The Gathering, particularly in how character attributes can be modified during play. Mistbound aims to bring the characters, creatures, and sounds of the world of Tyria to the card game format.
