According to Push Square and IGN, warning stickers have begun appearing on PlayStation 5 boxes with disc drives that are now reaching retailers. The notices inform buyers that physical game disc production for PlayStation will be discontinued starting January 2028.
The move reinforces Sony's commitment to the decision, announced in late July, to end physical media manufacturing for new releases. As reported by Polygon, the company justified the change by noting that physical game sales represent a small portion of its profits.
The decision has sparked backlash within the gaming community. According to GamesRadar, Mexican lawmakers Luis Donaldo Colosio and Iraís Reyes filed a complaint with Mexico's National Antitrust Commission against Sony, arguing that the company charges customers as if offering ownership while only guaranteeing rental rights by restricting new releases to the PlayStation Store after 2028.
The end of physical disc production marks a major shift for the industry, cementing the dominance of digital distribution that has already overtaken physical sales for years.
