Marc Merrill, co-founder and chief product officer at Riot Games, confirmed during a PAX West panel that the League of Legends-based MMO remains in active development. Merrill referred to the project internally as the studio's "Grail quest."
When asked about a release date, Merrill said Riot understands players' hopes and dreams, but the challenge lies in execution. "We jokingly call it the Grail internally because we're like, 'fuck it,' many a brave knight are gonna die on the Grail quest. But fuck it, it's the Grail, so let's go," Merrill described the mindset Riot tries to foster.
The MMO was first announced in August 2019. Since then, the project has undergone multiple changes and saw several high-profile developers leave. Merrill's confirmation comes after Riot shut down development on 2XKO, its tag-fighting game that was discontinued in August this year less than three weeks after its early access launch.
Merrill also stated that despite the challenges ahead, the team is doing reasonable work and believes the future is "incredibly bright" for the project.
