Squadron 42, the single-player campaign spinoff of the MMO Star Citizen, has been pushed from 2026 to Q2 2027. Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts announced the delay in a letter to the game's backers.
Roberts cited GTA 6's November 19, 2026 launch as the reason. The studio chose to avoid releasing Squadron 42 in the same period, arguing the game would be "drowned out" by the massive media coverage surrounding Rockstar's release. The reasoning is calendar-based and tied to visibility, not development status.
This is the latest setback for the long-in-development title. An earlier target revealed at CitizenCon 2024 was a Q4 2026 launch. Squadron 42 has been sold as a separate product from Star Citizen since 2016, though both share the same universe and engine. It will feature a single-player narrative campaign distinct from the online experience of the main title.
