Activision has removed real-world footage of the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush tragedy from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's opening cinematic. The incident, which occurred in Seoul's Itaewon district and killed around 150 people, triggered backlash from bereaved families and South Korean civic groups.
According to Eurogamer, the bereaved families association and the Citizens Countermeasure Meeting requested removal of the footage. Activision stated the intro is "not intended to reference or trivialise the Itaewon disaster or any other real-world tragedy."
The change aligns with Infinity Ward's commitment to Modern Warfare 4's grounded tone. Recently, the studio added "Non-MilSim Content" disclaimers to modes like Possession, a Halloween-themed playlist featuring fantastical mechanics that deviate from the game's realistic aesthetic.
Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23 as a standalone title, signaling a shift in the franchise's strategy. Season 1 arrives November 6 with new maps and weapons.
