Series director Naoki Hamaguchi has announced that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will change how hard mode is handled compared to Remake and Rebirth. In both previous entries, hard mode was only unlocked after completing the full campaign, which discouraged experienced players from tackling the challenge on their initial run.
The shift addresses a recurring complaint from players. Those skilled with the combat systems of earlier games had to choose between playing on normal difficulty or waiting weeks (given Rebirth's length) to access a genuine challenge on a second playthrough.
Hamaguchi revealed that hard mode "won't function in the exact same way as it did in Remake and Rebirth," suggesting adjustments to how enemy strength and difficulty scaling work. The confirmation came during an interview with Hardcore Gamer at Tokyo Game Show.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches in 2027 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, concluding Square Enix's remake trilogy of the 1997 classic.
