It's official: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is being remastered for Switch 2, Nintendo announced during this week's Nintendo Direct. The classic 1998 Nintendo 64 title is receiving a fresh version for the company's latest console.
The announcement raises a recurring question among fans: why does Nintendo prioritize remakes of 3D Zelda titles while overlooking the 2D classics? According to GameSpot, the company has never remastered the original The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, or A Link to the Past — the three games that defined the franchise during the NES and SNES eras. These titles introduced mechanics like puzzle-filled dungeons, pot breaking, and strategically placed secrets, elements that remain core to the series even today.
Ocarina of Time is just the latest in a long line of remakes and remasters of Zelda's 3D titles, solidifying a clear trend in Nintendo's strategy for revitalizing its action-adventure franchise. The company did not reveal a specific launch date beyond stating the game will arrive on Switch 2 soon.
