Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy declared in an interview that his aim is to transform RuneScape into the number one MMO globally within the next five years. According to him, although there is currently a significant gap between RuneScape and World of Warcraft, the studio believes it can close that distance with the right strategy.
The statement marks clear ambition from the studio to establish RuneScape as a major force in the MMORPG market. Bellamy told The Game Business: "The dream is that we're not the number two biggest MMO brand in the world, we're number one."
RuneScape, a classic British point-and-click title launched in 2001, maintains a loyal player base and receives regular updates. World of Warcraft, released by Blizzard in 2004, remains the dominant reference in the genre despite fluctuations in subscriber numbers over the years.
