Control Resonant launches on September 24 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game went live for critic review today, and early scores point to a successful sequel, landing at 84 on Metacritic and 85 on OpenCritic, as reported by Flow Games.
The title marks a creative departure for Remedy: instead of repeating the original Control's (2019) shooter formula, this sequel pivots to an open-world action-RPG built around melee combat. Players take on Dylan Faden, a man waking from a seven-year coma to find Manhattan transformed into a labyrinth of interdimensional forces. The core weapon is the Aberrant, a tool that morphs during combat, shifting from axe to whip to hammer.
According to Push Square, Control Resonant delivers "wildly inventive" moments and "a pretty hefty step up" from the 2019 original, with sequences where Manhattan skyscrapers fold in on themselves like a dream from Inception. Eurogamer highlights the visual inventiveness and absurd scenarios Remedy's engine pulls off. PC Gamer praises the game's performance on lower graphics settings, showing that maximum graphical fidelity isn't necessary for a solid visual experience.
The game slots into Remedy's Connected Universe, the shared world linking Control, Alan Wake 2, and other titles. Control Resonant also pays tribute to David Lynch with a Twin Peaks reference: a cinema in-game displays the marquee "NOW PLAYING: FIX YOUR HEART OR DIE," a quote from the filmmaker who passed in January 2025.
