Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games and creator of the Grand Theft Auto series, weighed in on the physical versus digital games debate that has dominated the industry following Sony's announcement to halt PlayStation disc production in January 2028.
Speaking with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Houser said that while he doesn't personally care about the issue, he believes companies should listen to player demand. "I don't know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it," the developer said. Houser led the writing on nearly every Grand Theft Auto game before departing Rockstar.
His comments come as Rockstar itself shifts toward digital distribution: GTA 6 will launch without a true physical version, containing only a download code inside the box. Other industry leaders have also responded to Sony's decision, with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and even French politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon joining the conversation.
While expressing affection for physical media, Houser stopped short of taking a strong stance against digital releases, acknowledging that both formats have their merits.
