NHL 27 uses generative AI for commentator lines, says broadcaster

EA Sports is using generative AI to generate voiceover lines for commentators in NHL 27. The revelation came from John Buccigross, an experienced broadcaster for the NHL game series, who discussed his experience working with EA Sports on the Chirping Zebras podcast.

Buccigross confirmed that he will continue as a commentator in NHL 27, but the company is also employing AI to create additional voice lines. "They're using some AI now; they played me some stuff back of my voice," Buccigross stated. "It's like 'Wow, that's pretty good!' If that means less work but the same check, I'll take it."

According to the broadcaster, the AI sometimes makes mistakes and requires review. Buccigross noted that some development team members, while experts in video games, don't always have strong sports knowledge, making it necessary to verify AI-generated lines before implementation in the game.

The use of AI in game production has been expanding, and NHL 27 becomes an example of its practical application in audio and sports commentary elements.
